“How much do you charge?”
That is a question we get asked a lot, usually during the initial meeting or on a phone call. We wish there was a simple answer to this question, but there isn’t.
The pricing of tax return services can be a bit complicated. We strive for the pricing of services to be clear and as simple as possible, but fair. We calculate the fee for each tax return based upon the forms used to prepare and file a full and accurate tax return and to claim all tax benefits you are legally eligible to claim. The more forms used, the more knowledge and expertise is required for your return and the more it will cost.
No Hidden Costs, No Surprises
We have no hidden costs, no surprises, no gift cards, no pricing changes during tax season, and no promises of big discounts that turn out to be a game of high prices – big discount = what they wanted to charge you anyway.
We aren’t the least expensive tax service, nor are we the most expensive. Our fees are in line with national and regional averages for the cost of professional tax services. We probably aren’t a good fit for you if the lowest cost service is what you want or you are hoping for a big discount.
We provide a fee estimate upon request. The estimate will be based upon the information you provide to us. We will do our best to provide you with an accurate estimate of the cost before you hire us to prepare your tax return. We will notify you of any increase in the actual fee as compared to the estimate before we complete your tax return.
Base Fees for Primary Tax Forms
Our tax return preparation services start with a base fee for the primary tax form. The cost of the return then increases depending upon the forms, schedules and worksheets and facts involved with each individual tax return. The U.S. tax laws are complicated and additional forms and schedules are required for accurate tax returns.
Citizen or Resident Living in the U.S. or Abroad
Our base fee for the primary tax forms for the single filing status, without dependents, standard deduction and citizen or resident of the U.S. are:
- Form 1040 EZ: $40
- Form 1040 A: $70
- Form 1040: $80
- State Tax Returns: $35
Stock sales, rental property, self-employment, farming and other business income reporting require additional forms, schedules and worksheets, so there are additional fees for returns with these types of income.
Nonresidents Living in the U.S. or Abroad
Our base fee for the primary tax forms for nonresident aliens, 1 Form W-2, Schedule A for itemized deductions and Schedule OI are:
- Form 1040NR, with Schedule OI : Starts at $80 and increases based upon the complexity of the tax return. The cost of this tax return can vary significantly depending upon the facts and circumstances of the taxpayer.
- Schedule A and Schedule NEC, when used with Form 1040NR, increase the cost of the tax return.
Positions based upon tax treaties and other specific forms related to visa status or non-residency are an additional fee.
Dual Status Residents
Our base fee for the primary tax forms for dual status residents, single filing status, no dependents, schedule A for itemized deductions and dual status statement are:
- Form 1040NR return and Form 1040 dual status statement: $80
- Form 1040 return and Form 1040NR dual status statement: $80
Additional fees are charged for married returns, claiming dependents and associated credits, foreign source income, foreign tax credit, foreign financial account reporting, investment income, rental property, election statements, and any other forms related to foreign income, expenses and assets.
All tax returns we prepare are electronically filed unless the IRS or the state requires the returns be mailed.
No Money Out of Pocket for Tax Preparation Fees
We have a low cost financial products available if you want to have tax preparation fees withheld out of a federal or state refund. You must meet specific criteria, such as not owing any delinquent federal or state tax or agency debt, to have the fees paid from your refunds. You must electronically file your tax return to be eligible for this service.
You can pay for services using cash, a major credit card, PayPal, or a check and have your refunds direct deposited or a check mailed to you. There are no additional fees for this method of getting your refunds.
However, if you choose to pay your fees from your federal and/or state tax refunds, there are additional fees. We offer the eCollect program through EPS Financial. Your refunds, after the payment of the tax preparation fee and facilitator fees, can be direct deposited into your personal account(s). EPS Financial and Drake Software each charge a fee to facilitate the transactions. We do not charge extra for the service. We only charge for tax services.
The costs to direct deposit the federal refund, not including the tax preparation fee is $28.95. (Drake Software Fee: $13.95 + EPS Financial Federal Refund Fee for Direct Deposit $15.00)
There is an additional fee of $10 if you want to have your state tax refund included in the financial product for direct deposit. There are no additional fees if you want the state to mail you a check or use direct deposit.
We do not make loans for quick refunds or advances against your refunds. Nor do we print checks or provide prepaid debit cards.
